Special characteristics of the region

With an area of 48 square kilometers, Lake Thun is the second largest lake in the Bernese Oberland and a true jewel of the region. Surrounded by the majestic mountains Eiger, Mönch, Jungfrau, Stockhorn, Niesen and Niederhorn, the lake offers a breathtaking landscape and numerous leisure opportunities. Whether hiking, biking, swimming or boating - everyone gets their money's worth at Lake Thun.

Places to visit

Lake Thun offers numerous opportunities for excursions and sightseeing. Especially popular are the boat trips on the lake, where you can enjoy the breathtaking scenery from the water. The towns of Thun and Interlaken are also worth a visit - here you can discover cozy cafes, restaurants and historical sights. Those interested in history and culture should definitely visit Spiez Castle or the Thun-Panorama.

Activities

Lake Thun is a perfect destination for those who long for nature, relaxation and recreation. Here you can hike, bike, swim or simply unwind. Water sports enthusiasts also get their money's worth at Lake Thun - from sailing and surfing to stand-up paddling, everything is possible here. Those who prefer a more leisurely pace can take a boat trip on the lake or visit one of the numerous wellness oases on the lake.

Events, festivals and traditions

Lake Thun is a hotspot for festival lovers. The Greenfield Festival in Interlaken, one of the largest open-air festivals in Switzerland, offers an impressive backdrop with views of the Alps. The Seaside Festival in Spiez on the shores of Lake Thun is also an annual highlight. An unusual tradition, on the other hand, is the Fulehung, a jester figure who is chased through the alleys at Thun's annual folk festival, the Ausschiesset.

Best time to travel

The best time to visit Lake Thun is from May to September, when the weather is warm and sunny. In summer, the water temperature can reach a pleasant 23 degrees, which invites you to swim and do other water sports. But also in winter it is good to camp here. Numerous winter resorts are waiting to be discovered.

Regional specialities

One of the best-known specialties is Bernese Hobelkäse. The recent hard cheese is traditionally shaved with a planer, also called Tête de Moine, into wafer-thin rolls and served as an aperitif or appetizer. The Bernese Rösti is also not to be missed, as is the Lake Thun fillet of whitefish. The fish, which is native to the lake, is prepared in various ways in the surrounding restaurants and is a delight for fish lovers.
