Special characteristics of the region
Graubünden is one of the largest mountain regions in Switzerland and offers an incomparable scenery. The majestic peaks, rushing rivers and crystal-clear lakes make the hearts of nature enthusiasts beat faster. Switzerland's easternmost canton is also known for its traditional Walser villages and its cultural diversity.
Places to visit
Graubünden offers numerous outdoor activities such as hiking, mountaineering, climbing and mountain biking. Apart from a large number of mountain lakes, some of the best-known excursion destinations are the Swiss National Park with over 80 km of hiking trails, or the Rhine and Viamala Gorge. But buildings such as the Tarasp Castle or the Landwasser Viaduct are also worth a visit.
Activities
Graubünden is particularly suitable for camping fans who want to spend time in nature and are looking for adventure. Hike the famous Bernina Trek, experience whitewater rafting on the Inn, or enjoy mountain bike tours through the alpine passes. Camping with private hosts offers unique insights into the many local activities.
Events, festivals and traditions
Graubünden is home to numerous festivals and events, such as the Open Air Lumnezia, the Festival da Jazz in St. Moritz, the Arosa ClassicCar and various sporting events for runners and bikers. If you want to get to know the local traditions, the best thing to do is visit the Prättigauer Alp Spektakel in October.
Best time to travel
For camping, the time from June to September is ideal when nature is in full bloom and the temperatures are pleasant for many outdoor activities. Winter sports enthusiasts will profit from camping sites which are also open in winter, perfect for skiing, snowboarding and snowshoe hiking in the region.
Regional specialities
In Graubünden you should definitely try the traditional Grisons barley soup, pizzoccheri, capuns and Grisons nut cake. Bündnerfleisch, an air-dried beef, is also a regional speciality and a must for meat lovers. Many private hosts offer local products from their farm for sale. Enjoy an authentic culinary experience amidst nature.
