Camping with children for the first time - what tips make it easier?

We asked this Ivonne Wolter, camping expert and founder of Zeltkinder. Here is her answer for newcomers to camping adventures with children.

Three personal tips from Ivonne Wolter

Start modestly

and check on a weekend and/or in the garden whether the tent adventure is something for you. Above all, you can practise setting up the tent in peace and quiet and explain everything to the children. You don't need to buy all the equipment straight away. There will certainly be people who are happy to lend you some of the equipment. You can find more and more providers on the Internet, e.g. Globetrotter or Vaude, who lend out family tents.

Camp nearby the first time

then you can go back again if you forget something. This will give you more security and the children will feel that. Incidentally, we forgot a lot of things at the beginning, but somehow we were able to borrow them locally, buy them or borrow them from nice fellow campers. The camping community often makes the difference in the end. The pitch is almost irrelevant if the children have lots of friends to play with and space to run around.

Think about what you want to do in the rain

and take the appropriate clothes/toys with you so that you don't get cabin fever. The children love being outside in the rain, playing puddle bocce, building stone castles over puddles or collecting earthworms. So take plenty of rainwear and wellies with you. You don't need lots of toys at the campsite, but you should bring a few books, pens and board games.
