Germany-35767 Breitscheid
The approximately 50-kilometer mountain variant of the Rothaarsteig offers guests in Breitscheid a beautifully staged hiking dream along the 'Path of the Senses,' connecting the Hanseatic city of Brilon with the Oranian city of Dillenburg. On the Westerwald-Steig, stretching from Herborn through Breitscheid to Bad Hönningen, hikers are treated to sweeping views of the diverse landscape.
For sports enthusiasts, winter brings groomed cross-country skiing trails of varying difficulty levels, which also serve as designated Nordic walking routes. You can take to the skies for a breath of fresh mountain air during a glider flight, while football golf offers a unique sporting activity for ball game fans.
Hike through Hesse's oldest nature reserve, climb a coral reef, and catch fantastic glimpses into caves, tunnels, and burial chambers from the earliest human settlements—all this is possible for visitors of the Karst and Cave Trail. This 3-8 kilometer loop along the Westerwald-Steig features 24 stations highlighting geological wonders: from the Erdbach swallow hole and the Homberg to the 'Steinkammern' (stone chambers), named Hesse's Geotope of the Year in 2015.

The 800-year-old church village of Breitscheid was once a stronghold of pottery and ceramics craftsmanship and is now considered the center of Hessian cave research. It boasts not only Hesse's deepest cave but also one of Germany's longest, currently spanning over 13,000 meters.
The 50-kilometer-long mountain variant of the Rothaarsteig trail offers guests in Breitscheid a beautifully staged hiking dream on the "Path of the Senses," connecting the Hanseatic city of Brilon with the Orange City of Dillenburg. On the Westerwald-Steig, from Herborn via Breitscheid to Bad Hönningen, hikers are treated to expansive views of the diverse landscape.
Hiking through Hesse's oldest nature reserve, climbing a coral reef, catching fantastic glimpses into caves, adits, and burial chambers from the earliest human settlements – all this is possible for visitors to the Karst and Cave Educational Trail. This 3-8 kilometer circular route on the Westerwald-Steig leads through 24 stations to geological peculiarities: from the Erdbachschwinde (sinkhole) over the Homberg to the Steinkammern (stone chambers), Hesse's Geotope of the Year 2015.
At the interactive Breitscheid Pottery Museum, tradition meets modernity. From utilitarian ceramics like egg cheese molds, jugs, bowls, and old water pipes spanning 260 years, to the terracotta army of the Chinese city of Xi'an, and modern 21st-century ceramics in aerospace and medical technology, visitors experience the versatility of clay. Every year on May 1st, a large pottery market takes place here, and on Eternity Sunday in November, the doors open for the Advent exhibition.
Discover the diversity of stalactites in the most beautiful light and enjoy a unique cave experience with a special guided tour concept – that's what a visit to the Herbstlabyrinth Breitscheid show cave offers, Europe's first stalactite cave fully illuminated with LED.
Best prospects for an eventful day!
