- Endless forests and ridge trails like the Westweg or Mittelweg
- Crystal-clear mountain lakes and wild cirque lakes (Karseen)
- Pure nature in Germany's largest low mountain range
- Charming villages, regional cuisine, and warm hospitality
Whether you're looking for a micro-adventure or hiking for several days: tent camping in the Black Forest means experiencing nature up close and consciously.

One-Night Camps & Trekking Sites in the Black Forest
Legal Alternative to Wild Camping
For several years now, so-called trekking camps or "One Night Camps" have been available in the Black Forest. They are specially designed for spending the night surrounded by nature – legally, safely, and with respect for the environment.
How the Camps Work
- Around 150 spots across the Northern and Southern Black Forest
- Simple pitches for 1–2 tents
- Fire pit or barbecue area, where permitted
- Online booking, often just a few euros per night
Important: You bring everything with you and leave nothing behind except footprints. "Leave no trace" is the motto.

Camping in the Black Forest National Park
The Black Forest National Park was founded in 2014 and covers more than 10,000 hectares of wilderness. Ancient forests, moors, and glacial cirque lakes are thriving here once again – a true wilderness experience. Tent camping is only permitted in designated trekking camps.
- Experience nature up close: Spend nights under the open sky right in the national park.
- Travel sustainably: Pure minimalism instead of luxury – with respect for nature.
- Ideal for hikers: Stay overnight directly along the Westweg or other long-distance trails.

What Makes Camping in the Black Forest National Park Special?
Combining Conservation and Nature Experiences
The Black Forest National Park was established in 2014 as the first protected area of its kind in Baden-Württemberg. Embedded within the Central/North Black Forest Nature Park, it spans over 10,000 hectares of pure wilderness, ancient woodland, and glacial cirque lakes. The goal is to allow natural processes to unfold – while offering people respectful experiences in nature. Camping in tents is only permitted here at the aforementioned trekking camps.
Travel Responsibly & Ambitiously
When tent camping in the Black Forest at trekking camps, the rule is: you bring everything yourself – sleeping bag, food, drinking water. Rubbish disposal is your own responsibility ("Leave no trace"), and fires are only permitted in designated areas. Stepping out of your comfort zone is part of the experience – with a clear commitment to nature.

Legal Campsites in the Black Forest
Alongside trekking camps, you'll find plenty of classic campsites with designated tent pitches across the Black Forest. They are often idyllically located on forest edges, along streams, or in valleys. Examples include:
- Campingplatz Schwarzwaldhorn (Simonswald): Separate tent area, Wi-Fi, and proximity to hiking trails.
- Naturcamping Langenwald: Set right in the forest, featuring a swimming pool and natural swimming pond.
- Camping Münstertal: Family-friendly, with a pool and wellness facilities.
These sites are ideal if you're looking for extra comfort – showers, electricity, and sometimes even a small restaurant.
Tips for Your Black Forest Tent Adventure
- Book early: Trekking camps fill up fast, especially in summer.
- Plan your route: Classic trails include the Westweg, Mittelweg, or Kandelhöhenweg.
- Prepare for the weather: Pack a rain jacket and insect repellent.
- Show respect: Follow local rules, keep noise down, and pack out all your trash.
- Check your gear: A lightweight tent, sleeping bag, and headlamp are essential.

Hiking Directly from Your Camp
Hiking is one of the most popular activities in the Black Forest. Many camping spots are located close to hiking paths, forest trails, ridge walks, and scenic viewpoints. This allows you to set off straight from your accommodation or reach great routes after a short drive. Whether it's a short stroll, a loop trail, a day hike, or a more demanding mountain tour, the Black Forest offers endless options for every pace.

Nature Holidays by Lakes and Waterfalls
The Black Forest is more than just woods and mountains; water plays a central role, too. Lakes like Titisee, Schluchsee, or smaller swimming lakes are perfect in summer for swimming, picnicking, or simply relaxing by the shore.

Cycling, Mountain Biking, and Excursions
Alongside hiking, cycling is another favorite in the Black Forest. Depending on the area, you'll find relaxed routes through valleys and villages or challenging trails with plenty of elevation gain. Exploring quaint Black Forest villages, farm shops, panoramic viewpoints, swimming lakes, or regional restaurants can easily be combined with your ride.
Peace, Seclusion, and a Digital Detox
Not every getaway needs a packed schedule. A stay in the Black Forest is also the perfect opportunity for a mindful break: reading, sitting outside, and simply taking in the peaceful green surroundings.

Essential Rules to Keep in Mind

No Noise, Leave No Trace
Respect other people's privacy and observe quiet hours at night. Wildlife also deserves a peaceful night's rest. Avoid making noise or causing disturbances, and leave your pitch spotlessly clean.

Washing Up and Showering
Do not do your dishes directly in lakes or streams, and never dump soapy wastewater into them. Use biodegradable dish soap and toothpaste. Washing yourself in a stream or river is fine, but make sure your soap is eco-friendly – or skip it altogether.

When Nature Calls
Only relieve yourself outdoors when absolutely necessary, and stay well away from water sources. Fecal bacteria can harm wildlife. Use a plastic bag to pack out your toilet paper, or burn it (never during wildfire risk periods) after burying your waste. True wild campers always carry a small trowel.

Campfires
In some areas, lighting open fires is strictly prohibited, as it disturbs wildlife. Look out for local warning signs. Always exercise extreme caution when lighting a fire, use designated fire pits only, and check the current wildfire risk level. In Ticino and Italy, we recommend never lighting an open fire.

Northern, Southern, or High Black Forest: Which Region Suits You?
The Black Forest is vast and varies greatly depending on the region. That’s why it’s worth considering which landscape and activities suit your holiday before booking.
Northern Black Forest
The Northern Black Forest is ideal if you're looking for dense woodlands, peaceful heights, and plenty of space for hiking. Regions around Baiersbronn, Freudenstadt, the Black Forest National Park, or the Black Forest High Road (Schwarzwaldhochstraße) are especially suitable for anyone looking to rent a cabin at the edge of the woods, in a quiet location, or surrounded by lush greenery.
Here, forest, tranquility, and sweeping views take center stage. A cabin in the Northern Black Forest is perfect for a weekend to unwind, a hiking trip, or a break away from popular tourist hotspots.
Southern Black Forest
The Southern Black Forest often feels more open, higher, and more alpine. Around Mount Feldberg, Lake Titisee, Lake Schluchsee, or the Münstertal valley, you will find mountains, lakes, viewpoints, and plenty of opportunities for active outdoor adventures.
A cabin in the Southern Black Forest is especially great if you want to combine hiking, water activities, panoramic views, and regional excursions. The region is also very attractive for families and dog owners, as nature, swimming spots, and destinations are often close together.
High Black Forest
The High Black Forest is the right choice if you are looking for high elevations, crisp air, and seasonal nature experiences. In summer, you can hike, cycle, or relax by the lakes. In winter, the region becomes especially cosy – with snow, quiet forests, and cabins that are ideal for evenings by the fire and peaceful retreats. Renting a cabin in the High Black Forest often gives you exactly what many associate with a Black Forest holiday: fir trees, mountains, lakes, tranquility, and a truly special atmosphere.
